Wounded Soldier’s House Saved

February 25, 2005

Kansas City, MO

During combat in Iraq, Spec. Frank Byers sustained injuries to his back that sent him home. His wife and four kids welcomed him back with great joy, but there was a problem that made the event bittersweet. Because of the family’s reduced income due to deployment and the additional expense from Spec. Byers’ medical needs, the family could not meet several mortgage payments on the house.  The lending institution asked that they make increased payments that Spec. Byers found impossible to meet. Then, the lender threatened foreclosure.

An acquaintance told Spec. Byers about Unmet Needs, so he asked for help.  Members of the VFW Foundation contacted the lender and apprised them of the situation.  After some negotiation, the institution restructured the loan and the Byers family was able to meet their mortgage and save their home.

A very grateful Spec. Byers commented that, “thanks to this organization (Unmet Needs), we were able to keep our house…the way we wanted to.”

Spec. Byers’ story in his own words – see video.
